Ryan Zimmerman's Two Homers Give Nats Split with Braves; Bobby Wilson, Albert Pujols Lead Angels Pat Texas

American League

In order to pick up some ground on NL West leader Texas, the LA Angels needed to take at least two out of three as they hosted the Rangers over the weekend.

After Jered Weaver delivered a 6-1 win in the first game, the Rangers came back to even the series with a 9-2 victory on Saturday, setting up Sunday night's rubber game.

Bobby Wilson
Catcher Bobby Wilson and Albert Pujols combined to drive in five runs as the Angels pulle to within five games in the division with a 7-4 triumph.

Pujols was 2-for-5 with a first inning, RBI double and his 18th home run, a seventh inning, two run blast that put the Angels ahead for good, at 6-2. Wilson had previously homered in the inning, socking a solo shot, his first homer of the season. He also singled in a run in the second and doubled and scored in the eighth, scoring the Angels' last run in a 3-for-4 effort.

As the Angels continue their pursuit of the Rangers, the win also gave them a 1/2 game lead over Baltimore in the wild card standings.


National League

Having led the NL East for most of the season, the Washington Nationals were feeling the heat as they dropped the first two games of their home series with Atlanta, the Braves drawing to within 1 1/2 games as of Friday night.

The Nats fought back with a 5-2 win on Saturday and evened the four-game series with a 9-2 thumping Sunday afternoon. pushing their lead back to a more comfortable 3 1/2 games.

Ryan Zimmerman, who's really been heating up of late, extended his hitting streak to six straight with a two-run homer and a pair of singles in five at-bats, driving in three runs and crossing the plate three times to lead the Nationals.

Zimmerman was 9-for-17 through the four game series with the Braves, boosting his batting average from .259 to .274. With four homers in his last five games, he's hit 14, with 50 RBI in just 53 games this season.
