Garland Pitches Halos Past O's; Guzman's 6 RBI Leads Nats

Players of the Day from Saturday, May 3, 2008 American League Jon Garland allowed just 3 hits and one walk over 8 innings, at one point setting down 13 in a row as the Angels beat Baltimore, 3-1, keeping a 1-game lead over Oakland in the West. Garland faced 26, just 2 over the minimum number of batters faced, striking out one, while getting 13 on fly balls and 9 on ground outs. Players of the Day from Friday, May 2, 2008 American League On Friday night, Chien-Ming Wang become the first pitcher in the American League to win 6 games, outdueling Seattle's Erik Bedard for a 5-1 Yankee victory. Wang worked six innings, allowing just 3 hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. The only run came in the 6th, when Ichiro Suzuki singled, stole second and third (he had 3 steals on the night) and scooted home on Raul Ibanez's ground out to second. Wang, 6-0, has easily been the brightest spot for the Yankees thus far in the season. He's pitched at least 6 innings in all but one start, and has recorded victories in 6 of 7 outings. National League Rafael Furcal singled twice, smacked a three-run homer in a 7-run Dodger 6th inning, scored twice and tallied 4 RBI in five at-bats, as the Dodgers won their seventh straight last night and closed the gap on NL West leader Arizona to 4 games with an 11-6 conquest of the Rockies in Denver. Furcal, LA's exceptional leadoff man, is second in the NL with a .380 batting average. His 30 runs and 46 hits lead the majors. Notes: The Arizona Diamondbacks are the only team in the majors with less than 10 losses. Their 7-2 loss at NY was their 9th of the year, against 20 wins. They have lost 2 of their last 3. Last night the D-Backs were victimized by Jose Reyes, who went 4-for-5 with a double and two triples, stole a base and scored three times.

Players of the Day from Thursday, May 1, 2008 American League The Detroit Tigers got off to a horrible start in '08, but, after completing a sweep of the Yankees with an 8-4 win on Thursday they are just a game under .500 and in the thick of the AL Central race, 1 1/2 games behind the White Sox. Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera provided most of the offense, as Ordonez went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Cabrera tripled and homered in four at-bats, driving in three runs and scoring one. It was the ninth straight game in which Cabrera had a hit and his sixth homer of the season.

The Tigers have been playing with more purpose of late, winning 12 of their last 17 since April 13. They are currently tied with Cleveland and Minnesota in a logjam behind Chicago. Notes: The A's and Angels ended their 4-game series last night in Anaheim, but despite the A's 15-8 win, the series produced no tangible result. The A's took the opener and the finale, while the Angels won two games in between, leaving the two tied for the AL West lead. The Angels may want to tweak their rotation and bullpen order. In their two wins, they allowed just one run. In the two losses, they gave up 29. National League Down 3-1 entering the 9th inning, the Brewers were in danger of dropping their second straight at Chicago, but a three-run rally, capped by Ryan Braun's bases-loaded double delivered a 4-3 win for Milwaukee and a 2-1 series split over the Cubs. Braun went 3-for-5 at the plate, earlier knocking a solo home run and an inconsequential single. The double in the ninth gave him 3 RBI total, as Ricky Weeks, trying to score from first, was gunned down at the plate. Braun also had a defensive moment, nailing Kosuke Fukudome at home to end a sixth inning threat. Notes: The Dodgers won their 6th straight, dropping Florida, 5-3, and have sliced Arizona's lead down to 5 games in the West. In the NL East, the Phillies assumed the top spot with a 3-2 win over the Padres and are 1/2-game in front of the Mets and Marlins.

Kotchman Delivers for Angels; Soto Blasts Pair, Drives in Six

Players of the Day from Wednesday, April 30, 2008 American League The LA Angels regained sole possession of first place in the AL West on Wednesday, as Casey Kotchman and Ervin Santana led the Angels to a 6-1 win over the Oakland A's. While Santana was working over the A's on 4 hits and no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings, improving his record to 5-0, Kotchman was taking care of business at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort, including a two-run double in the second inning, another double and a single. In just his second season as a starter with the Angels, Kotchman is providing plenty of offense. He's batting .344 with 6 homers and 19 RBI.
