The Giants got all over Cardinal starter Chris Carpenter, dinging him for six hits and five runs (three unearned) over four innings. St. Louis relievers didn't fare much better, as the Giants banged out a total of 12 hits, plating two more in the bottom of the eighth after scoring once in the first and four times in the fourth.

Vogelsong, in just his second post-season start, earned his first playoff win, allowing a sole earned run on four hits and a pair of walks. The 25-year-old hurler fanned four and threw 106 pitches over his seven innings of work.

Jeremy Affelt pitched a perfect eighth and the Cardinals could only muster one hit in the ninth off closer Sergio Romo.

Pivotal game three is scheduled for 4:07 pm EDT, Wednesday afternoon in St. Louis. Matt Cain takes the mound for the Giants. Kyle Lohse gets the start for the Cardinals.
