Yankees lose, Brewers win; Phillies gain on night off
American League
Minnesota 2 Detroit 0 - Carlos Silva threw 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball, reducing the Tigers' tragic number to 1. One more loss by Detroit or win by the Yankees would eliminate them from the playoffs.
Toronto 4 NY Yankees 1 - New York trails Boston by 2 games in the division, but needs just one win to wrap up the wild card. The Yankees will have ample opportunity, closing out the regular season on the road with a pair of 3-game series, at Tampa Bay and Baltimore
Other AL Scores
Kansas City 2 Baltimore 3
LA Angels 7 Texas 8
National League
St. Louis 5 Milwaukee 13 - The Brewers gain a 1/2 game on idle Chicago, but trail the Cubs by 3 games with just 6 left to play. Prince Fielder (right) went 3-5, including a 3-run homer - his league-leading 48th - and drove in three runs, tying him with Houston's Carlos Lee for third in the NL with 115.
Washington 13 NY Mets 4 - The Mets continue to do their best to make the NL East interesting, losing for the 7th time in their last 11 games.
San Diego 4 San Francisco 9 - the Padres made it a wonderful night off for the Phillies, who picked up 1/2 game on the Mets and tied San Diego for the wild card lead. Omar Vizquel had a productive night, tripling in a run and scoring in the 2nd inning, driving in two more with a single in the 3rd, and squeezing home Rich Aurilia in the 7th.
