Yankees Slip by Sox; Zambrano Boosts Cubs

American League NY Yankees 8 Boston 7 - New York scored 6 times in the 8th inning, Luis Vizcaino worked a perfect 8th and Mariano Rivera held the Sox scoreless in the 9th for his 27th save as the Yankees took the first of a crucial 3-game series in Boston, drawing to within 4 1/2 games of the Red Sox for the AL East lead. Johnny Damon victimized his old teammates, going 4-4, though only scoring once. Alex Rodriguez capped the comeback, driving in Bobby Abreu with the lead run with a single, his only hit of the game. A-Rod has 141 RBI, which leads the majors. Texas 9 Oakland 11 - Sammy Sosa (right) slugged his 20th home run of the season and drove in 5 runs in a losing effort for the Rangers. Sosa, after sitting out all of 2006, has rebounded with a solid season, driving in 88 runs in 108 games. Cincinnati 6 Milwaukee 5 - Prince Fielder hit his league-leading 45th home run, and Cincy's Adam Dunn socked his 39th as the Reds climbed to within 2 games of third place in the NL Central division, spoiling the hopes of the Brewers, who failed to keep pace with Chicago. Philadelphia 3 NY Mets 2, 10 innings - The Phillies probably won't catch the Mets in the division, but they kept their playoff hopes alive with an extra-inning triumph at Shea.
